Psikofarmakoloji her ne kadar Dikkat Eksikliği Hiperaktivite Bozukluğu'nun (DEHB) pek çok temel semptomunu (dikkat problemleri, hiperaktivite, dürtüsellik) iyileştirse de, kişiye eşlik eden işlevsel bozuklukla baş etmede gerekli becerileri ve somut teknikleri kazandırmaz. Düşük başarı, işsizlik, ekonomik sorunlar, ilişki sorunları gibi erişkin DEHB'nun yol açtığı yaşam boyu işlevsellik kaybı, etkin problem çözme yöntemleri gerektirir. Bu da ilaçların dışında beceri eğitimleriyle kazandırılabilecek bir şeydir. Erişkin DEHB'nun tedavisi ilaçlarla psikososyal yaklaşımların birlikte kullanımını gerektirir. Although psychopharmacology may ameliorate many of the core symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (attentional problems, high activity, impulsivity), it does not provide the client with concrete strategies and skills for coping with associated functional impairment. Quality of life impairments such as underachievement, unemployment or underemployment, economic problems, and relationship difficulties associated with ADHD in adulthood require active problem solving ,which can be achieved with skills training over and above medication management. Recommendations for the optimal treatment of adult ADHD call for the use of concomitant psychosocial interventions with medications. Interactions of cognitions, emotions, behaviors and beliefs play an important role in ADHD as well as other psychiatric disorders. Psychoeducation about the nature, causes, and course of ADHD is critically important foundation for treatment. In cognitive behavioral therapy, therapist helps to structure interaction with the patient during therapy session, interrupting as necessary and structuring conversation around an agenda of spesific goals important for the patient.
