Amaç: Bu çalışma üniversite öğrencilerinde premenstrual sendrom belirtilerini, premenstrual sendromu etkileyen etkenleri ve premenstrual sendrom ile somatizasyon arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Çalışma Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi'nde okuyan ve araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 890 öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veriler Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu, Premenstrual Sendrom Ölçeği (PMSÖ) ve Somatizasyon Ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde Student t testi, ANOVA ve Pearson korelasyon analizi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Öğrencilerin %57.2'si nde premenstrual sendrom saptanmıştır. Somatizasyon puanı premenstrual sendromu olan-larda anlamlı düzeyde yüksektir. Öğrencilerin PMSÖ alt ölçekleri (ağrı, uyku değişimleri, yorgunluk, depresif düşünceler, anksiyete, depresif duygulanım, sinirlilik, şişkinlik ve iştah değişimleri) ile somatizasyon puanları arasında pozitif yönde ilişkiler bulunmuştur. Sigara içen, alkol kullanan, adet ve siklus süresi uzun olan, menstru-asyon döneminde ağrı yaşayan, menstruasyon nedeniyle okula devamı, okul başarısı ve günlük yaşamı etkilenen, menstruasyonu olumsuz olarak algılayan, ailesindeki diğer kadınların da menstruasyona ilişkin sorunlar yaşadı-ğını belirten ve menstruasyon döneminde yaşadığı sorunlar nedeniyle doktora başvuran öğrencilerde PMSÖ toplam puanı anlamlı düzeyde daha yüksektir. Sonuç: Çalışmamız premenstrual sendromun üniversite öğrencile-rinde yaygın olduğunu göstermektedir. Premenstrual sendromu olan öğrencilerin olmayanlara göre somatizasyon eğilimleri yüksektir. Objective: This research was conducted to investigate the premenstrual syndrome symptoms in university students, the factors affecting premenstrual syndrome and the relation between premenstrual syndrome and somatization. Methods: The research was performed on 890 students who study at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and accepted to take part in the research. Data were collected by a Descriptive Information Form developed by the researchers, the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PSS) and the Somatization Scale. In the ana-lysis of the data Student t test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation analysis was used. Results: Premenstrual syn-drome was detected in 57.2% of the students. Somatization score significantly higher in students with premenst-rual syndrome. There were significant relations between the subscale scores of PSS (pain, sleep changes, fa-tigue, depressive thoughts, anxiety, depressed mood, irritability, and bloating and appetite changes) and somati-zation score of the students. PSS total mean scores were significantly higher in students who smoke and drink alcohol, who have long menstruation process and menstrual cycles, who have pain in menstruation process, who affect daily life, school attendance and school performance because of menstrual problems, who have a negative perception about menstruation, who have problems related to menstruation in other women in their families and who have admit to doctor because of menstrual problems. Conclusion: Our study shows that PMS is common among university students. Somatization tendency of students with premenstrual syndrome was higher than nonpremenstrual
syndrome students. Premenstrual syndrome should be addressed through a holistic approach.
