Amaç: Bu araştırmada, bir üniversite hastanesi polikliniğine başvuran depresyon tanılı hastaların depresyona
ilişkin bilgi ve tutumları ve bunları etkileyen etmenlerin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Yöntem: Araştırma Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Psikiyatri polikliniğine başvuran hastalar üzerinde
yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada, Psikiyatrik Araştırmalar ve Eğitim Merkezi (PAREM) araştırmacıları tarafından
geliştirilen anket formunun 32 maddelik depresyon alt bölümü kullanılmıştır.
Bulgular: Deneklerin % 91.9’u (n=79) depresyonun bir hastalık olduğunu, % 82.6’sı (n=71) depresyonun
sosyal sorunlar nedeniyle ortaya çıktığını, % 96.5’i (n=83) depresyonun tedavi edilebilen bir hastalık
olduğunu belirtmiştir. Deneklerin % 8.1’i (n=7) depresyonlu hastaların toplumda serbestçe dolaşmamaları
gerektiğini, % 32.6’sı (n=28) depresyonlu hastaların saldırgan olacağını belirtmiştir.
Sonuç: Psikiyatri polikliniğine başvuran ve bir depresif bozukluk tanısı olan hastalar depresyonu yüksek
oranda bir hastalık olarak değerlendirip, depresyon etiyolojisinde sosyal sorunları sorumlu tutulmaktadır ve
depresyon sağaltımı konusunda doğru bilgilere sahiptir. Hastaların depresyonlu kişilere yönelik tutumları
oldukça olumludur. Depresif epizot içinde olmak daha olumsuz ve reddedici tutumlara neden olmaktadır.
Damgalanma ya da dışlanma endişesini daha fazla yaşayan hastalar depresyonlu hastaları, diğer hastalara
oranla, daha fazla kabul etmekte ve daha az dışlayıcı yaklaşmaktadır.

Objective: Public attitudes toward depression can affect the patient to recognize his/her illness, help seeking behavior, the way of getting in
contact with the psychiatrist, and treatment adherence. For this reason, it is important to determine the knowledge and attitudes of people
who are using psychiatric services towards mental disorders, especially theirs. In this study, it is aimed to determine the knowledge and
attitudes of depressed patients attending a university hospital psychiatry outpatient clinic towards depression and related factors.
Method: This study is carried out on patients with depression who seek help from Celal Bayar University Hospital psychiatry outpatient clinic.
In this study, a thirty-two item questionnaire designed for rating the attitudes towards depression by PREC (Psychiatric Research and Education
Centre) was used. Recently, this public survey form was used in a project titled “Searching public’s attitudes towards mental diseases”
organised by PREC. Psychiatrists made face-to-face interview with the subjects.
Results: Of the whole subjects, % 91.9 (n=79) stated that depression is a disease. Eighty – two percent (n=71) of all subjects suggested
that depression is due to social problems. Of the subjects 96.5% (n=83) had an opinion that “depression is a treatable disease”. Of the
whole sample, 8.1% (n=7) stated that patients with depression shouldn’t be free in community, and % 32.6 (n=28) stated that patients with
depression may be agressive. Moreover, 53.5 % (n=46) suggested that they wouldn’t get married with such patients. Attitudes of subjects
in depressive episode towards patients with depression are more negatively. Also attitudes of patients who disguise the using psychiatric
services are more positive than others. There is no an important effect of socio-demographic factors on the attitudes towards depression.
Conclusion: The patients with depression who using psychiatric services recognize commonly as a disorder. Social problems are resulted
from aetiology of depression by the subjects. They have got sufficient knowledge about depression treatment. Attitudes of depressed
patients attending a university hospital psychiatry outpatient clinic towards patienst with depression are quitely positive. However attitudes of
patients in depressive epizode are more negative and more rejected. In addition, attitudes of patients who have more anxiety of stigmatisation
or discrimination are more positive. Their levels of social accept of depressive patients are more higher than patients who less anxiety of
stigmatisation or discrimination. Furthermore, they have less discrimination tendency to depressive patients.
