Giriş ve Amaç: Psikoaktif madde kullanımı dünyada giderek artarken, özellikle gençler en önemli risk grubunu oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti (KKTC) lise öğrencilerinde sigara, alkol ve diğer psikoaktif maddeleri (DPM) kullanma yaygınlığını ve geçen yıllara göre değişen oranları belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Araştırma Aralık 2004'te KKTC'de ki 33 lisenin tümünde, 2267 lise ikinci sınıf öğrencisi arasında yapılmıştır. Öğrencilere uygulanan ankette sosyodemografik özellikler, sigara ve alkol kullanımı, diğer psikoaktif maddelerin kullanımı ile ilgili sorular yer almıştır. Anketteki sigara, alkol ve diğer psikoaktif madde kullanımı ile ilgili bölüm Avrupa Konseyi, alkol ve diğer maddelerle ilgili Avrupa Okulları Araştırma Projesinin anket soruları temel alınarak hazırlanmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmada KKTC'de ki lise ikinci sınıf öğrencileri arasında yaşam boyu sigara içme yaygınlığı % 35.2, alkol kullanma yaygınlığı % 85.9 ve herhangi bir DPM yaygınlığı % 8.0 olarak saptanmıştır. Yaşam boyu en az bir kez uçucu madde deneme oranı % 3.3, sedatif-hipnotik % 2.4, esrar % 2.2, ekstazi % 1.8, kokain % 0.7, eroin % 0.6 olarak bulunmuştur. Öğrenciler arasında ilk denenen maddelerin esrar ve ekstazi olduğu belirlenmiştir. DPM kullanımı erkekler arasında daha yaygın bulunmuştur. Aile ilişkileri iyi olmayan, her gün sigara içen ve sarhoşluk yaşayan öğrencilerde daha çok DPM kullanımı görülmüştür. Sonuç: Araştırma sonuçları KKTC lise öğrencileri arasında psikoaktif madde kullanım oranlarının Avrupa ülkelerine göre daha düşük olduğunu göstermekle birlikte, birçok psikoaktif maddede geçmiş yıllara göre artış eğilimi bulunduğunu göstermiştir. Çalışmamızın verileri KKTC'de sürdürülecek önleme programlarında, özellikle risk gruplarının başında gelen lise öğrencileri üzerinde durulması gerektiğini ortaya koymaktadır.

Objective: Drug use has become a growing problem in the world. Young people especially form an important risk group. This study investigates the prevalence of alcohol, cigarette and other psychoactive drug (OPD) use and the change of ratios compared to previous [year]s among high school students in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Methods: All grade two high school students were taken into the study and a survey was applied to 2267 students attending to 33 high schools of TRNC in December 2004. The survey form consisted of questions about sociodemographic variables, cigarette, alcohol and OPD use. The questions about cigarette, alcohol and other OPD were taken from the questions of European Council, ?The European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs? (ESPAD). Results: In our study the lifetime prevalence of cigarette use among grade two high school students is 35.2%, alcohol 85.9% and the prevalence of OPD is 8.0%. The lifetime prevalence of inhalant use is 3.3%, sedative, hypnotic drug use 2.4%, marijuana use 2.2%, ecstasy use 1.8%, cocaine 0.7% and heroin 0.6%. The first tried OPD among the students are marihuana and ecstasy. OPS use is more common among males. The students who do not have good relation with their families, who smoke everyday and have become drunk, are found to use OPS more. Conclusion: The results of the study show that the ratio of psychoactive drug use among TRNC high school students is much lower than European countries, but the prevalence of most of the drugs have tendency to increase compared to previous [year]s. The data of the study suggests that emphasis should be given to high school youth at prevention studies conducted in TRNC.
