Depresyon toplumda yaygın görülen bir psikiyatrik hastalık olmasına rağmen nörobiyolojisi ile ilgili bilinenler hala son derece sınırlıdır. Son yıllarda araştırmalar nöronlarda plastik değişiklikler, nörotrofik faktörler ve sitokinler gibi moleküllerin önemli olduğuna işaret etmektedir. Plastisite nöronların, oluşturdukları sinapsların değişebilme, belli durumlara yapısal ve fonksiyonel olarak adapte olmasını sağlayan bir özelliktir. Nörotrofik faktörler ve sitokinler ise bu değişime aracılık eden dolayısıyla değişikliklerin organizmada oluşturacağı yanıtı module eden maddelerdir. Preklinik ve klinik çalışmaların sonuçları sözkonusu faktörlerin depresyonun hem etyolojisinde hem de tedavisinde kritik rol oynadıklarını göstermektedir.

Although depression is a common psychiatric disorder in the society, very limited is known about its neurobiology. In recent [year]s research point that plastic changes in neurones, neurotrophic factors and cytokines were important molecules. Plasticity can be defined as a property which allowds neurons, and synapses to change and adapt to certain conditions sutructuraly and functionaly. Neurotrophic factors and cytokines are modulaters for this change and therefore the response of the organism. Preclinical and clinical studies demonstrate that neurotrophic factors and cytokines play a critical role both in the etiology and treatment of depression.
