Deliryum, genel hastanelerde tedavi gören hastaları en çok etkileyen nöropsikiyatrik bozukluktur. Geçici, hızlı başlayan, dalgalı seyir gösteren ve genellikle geri dönüşlü bir organik ruhsal bozukluk olarak tanımlanır. Kısa bir sürede gelişen bilinç bozukluğuna eşlik eden bilişsel değişiklikler tipik özelliğidir. Bir hastalık değil altta yatan hastalıklara bağlı bir klinik sendromdur. Etiyoloji çok sayıda tıbbi durumun fizyolojik etkilerine bağlıdır. Altta yatan nedenlerin ve risk faktörlerinin doğru tanınması, erken tanı ve tedavide esastır. Deliryum tedavisi esas olarak altta yatan nedenlerin tedavisine yöneliktir. Hastayı rahatlatmak ve bakımını sürdürebilmek için psikotrop ilaçlar kullanılmaktadır. Bu makale, deliryumun klinik özellikleri, etiyolojik ve risk faktörlerini olduğu kadar uygun tanı ve tedavi etme yollarını da gözden geçirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.

Delirium is most common acute neuropsychiatric disorder affecting patients in general hospitals. It is defined as a transient, rapid-onset, usually reversible organic mental disorder with a fluctuating course. It is commonly characterized by disturbance of consciousness and a change in cognition that develops over a short period of time. Delirium itself is not a disease, but rather a clinical syndrome, which result from an underlying disease. The etiology may be related to the physiological effects of a large number of medical conditions. Accurate identification of underlying causes and risk factors is essential in early-stage diagnosis and treatment. Treatment of delirium requires treatment of the underlying causes. Psychotropic medications are used to comfort patients or to allow better patient management. This article aims to review the clinical charecteristics, etiologic and risk factors as well as routes to an acurrate diagnosis and treatment of the delirium.
