Günümüzde psikoterapi alanında en hızlı biçimde yaygınlaşan terapi türü olan bilişsel davranışçı terapi psikoloji biliminin ortaya koyduğu öğrenme kuramları ve bilişsel psikoloji ilkelerine dayalı olarak geliştirilmiş bir psikoterapi olarak bireyde sorun olan duygu ve uyumsuz davranışların değiştirilmesini amaçlar. Bilişsel davranışçı terapi bilimsel araştırmalarla ortaya konan bu sorun yaratan duygu, biliş ve davranışların hangi yöntemlerle en etkili biçimde değiştirilebileceği konusunda varsayımlar geliştirir. Daha sonra bu yöntemlerin hastalarda kullanılmasıyla yapılan tedavi çalışmalarında bu yöntemler sınanır. Eğer bu yöntemlerin etkili olduğu yapılan yansız kontrollü çalışmalarla ortaya konursa bu o rahatsızlığın tedavi protokolü olarak yaygınlaştırılır. Bu ilkeler aynı zamanda kanıta dayalı psikoterapi dediğimiz yaklaşımların da özüdür.

After that this set of techiniques applied to a group of patients, and if the randomise clinical trials prove that this cognitive behavioral treatment protocols are effective then this protocols are disseminated to therapists. This approach is also essence of the empirically based psychotherapy.
