Psikoterapi kısaca ruhsal yollarla yardım ve iyileştirme şeklinde tanımlanabilir. Bu tanımı bugünkü psikiyatri pratiği bazında, herhangi bir biyolojik sağaltım yönteminin kullanılmadan hastanın iyileştirilme yöntemi şeklinde sınırlamak olanaklıdır. Psikanaliz ise bir sağaltım yöntemi olmasının yanında, bir ruhbilimsel kuram ve başka yoldan ulaşılması neredeyse olanaksız olan zihinsel süreçlerin inceleyen bir tekniktir. Psikanaliz, Freud'un çalışmalarıyla yeni bir disiplin olarak başlamış ve sonrasında diğer psikanalistlerin katkıları ile psikanalitik kuram gelişmeye devam etmiştir. Psikanaliz bir sağaltım yöntemi olarak kullanıldığı zaman; bu terapinin amacı hastanın anlattıklarından (serbest çağrışım) ve kurulan ilişkinin özelliklerinden yola çıkarak kuramsal bilgiler çerçevesinde hastanın anlaşılması, formüle edilmesi ve analitik teknikleri kullanarak iyileştirilmesidir. Psikanalitik psikoterapi de, psikanaliz kuramını temel alan, aynı kavram ve yöntemleri kullanan (az ya da çok) fakat klasik uygulama kurallarına her zaman bağlı kalmayan psikoterapi ya da sağaltım yöntemidir.

Psychotherapy could shortly be defined as healing and helping others by using psychologic methods. In today's psychiatric practice it is possible to restrict this definition as a method of healing patient without using a biological treatment method. In additon to be a treatment method, psychoanalysis is also a psychological theory and a technique for analysing mental processes which is almost impossible to reach in other ways. Psychoanalysis has become a new discipline with the studies of Freud and progress of psychoanalytic theory have been continued with contributions of other psychoanalyists after Freud. When psychoanalysis is used as a therapy method, the aim of this therapy is to understand patient, formulate and heal the patient by using analytical techniques based on what the patient told (free association) and the features of relationship within the framework of theoretical knowledge. As well psychoanalytical psychotherapy is a psychotherapy or treatment method which is based on psychoanalytic theory and which is using the same concepts and methods (more or less) without adhering strictly rules of classical psychoanalysis.
