Diyalektik ilkeler ve stratejiler; “bütün” ve “onun parçaları” arasındaki ilişkilere mantıklı pozitivizm ve ayrılıkçı bir pencereden bakar. Diyalektik karşıtlıkların sentezini içerir (tez ve antitez). Sentez, hem tezden, hem de antitezden parçalar içerir. Sentez uzlaşmadan çok, yeni bir pozisyon, yeni bir açıklama ya da yeni bir fikirdir.

Diyalektik davranışçı terapi, temel olarak “değişimi” süren bir süreç ve gerçekliğin başlıca karakteristiği olarak kabul eder. Bu nedenden dolayı, terapi yalnız hastanın değişimini içermekten öte, terapisti ve terapiyi de değişimin bir parçası olarak kabul eder. Diyalektik bakış açısına göre, tek bir doğru yanıt, strateji, açıklama, çözüm yoktur. Mutlak yanlış ve doğru ilişkisi vurgulanmayarak hastanın ve terapistin arasındaki terapötik bağ güçlendirilir. Çünkü yalnız tek bir mutlak doğru olmadığının farkına varmak hem hastanın, hem de terapistin amaçlarına ulaşması konusunda yardımcı olur.

Diyalektik davranışçı terapi özellikle sınır kişilik bozukluğu, madde kötüye kullanımı, intihar eğilimi ve yeme bozukluğu olan hastalarda kullanılır

Dialectical principals and strategies hold a rationally positive and separatist point of view to examine the relationship between the “whole” and “its parts”. Dialectic contains the synthesis of contradictions (thesis and antithesis). Synthesis contains parts from both thesis and antithesis. Rather than coming to an agreement, syn-thesis is more of a new position, a new explanation, or a new idea.

The base of dialectic behavioral therapy accepts the “change” as a continuous period and an essential characteristic of reality. Hence, the treatment does not only consist the changes of the patient but also accepts both the therapist and the therapy as the part of the change. According to dialectic point of view, there is not one particular answer, strategy, explanation, solution to a problem. Not emphasizing the absolute ‘rights’ and ‘wrongs’ improves the relationship between the therapist and the patient, because realizing that there is not one absolute “right” helps them both to reach their goals.

Dialectical behavioral therapy is especially used for patients with borderline personality disorder, substance abuse problem, chronic eating disorder, and suicidal tendency.
