Hem etiyolojik ve hem de fenotipik olarak oldukça heterojen tablolara neden olan serebral kortikal gelişim malformasyonları (SKGM) giderek artan sayıda teşhis edilmektedir. SKGM’lerde terminoloji ve sınıflama ile ilgili halen belirsizlikler vardır. Son yıllarda sınıflama, genetik, embriyolojik, görüntüleme özellikleri ve patolojik bulguların kombinasyonuna göre yapılmaktadır. Erken çocukluk döneminde klinik başlangıç genellikle daha ciddi ve çeşitli nörolojik problemleri beraberinde taşır. Motor ve mental gelişme bozukluğu, değişik derecelerde nörolojik muayene bulguları, epileptik nöbetler, dismorfik özellikler, öğrenme güçlükleri ve davranış bozuklukları başlıca klinik özelliklerdir. En sık etkilenen bölgeler olarak frontal ve temporal loplar belki de teratojenite ve genetik etkilenmeye en hassas bölgeler olabilir. Korteksin bu heterojen malformasyonlar grubunun sınıflandırılması ve etiyolojisi gelişimsel nörobiyolojideki gelişmelerle açıklık kazanacaktır.

The malformations of cortical development (MCD) are currently being identified with increasing frequency. They are a heterogeneous group of conditions both in terms of the etiology, and the resulting phenotype. The terminology and classification of MCD remains somewhat controversial. Recently, it has been proposed that the classification is based on a combination of genetic, embriologic, imaging, and pathologic characteristics. Individuals presenting the symptoms of MCD in early childhood generally have more severe and varied neurological problems. The main clinical features are motor and mental maldevelopment,

variable degrees of neurological deficits, epileptic seizures, dysmorphic features, learning disabilities, and behavioral disorders. The frontal and temporal lobes are the most frequently affected regions. These areas may be more susceptible to teratogenic or genetic influences. The classification and etiologies of this

heterogeneous group of disorders of cortical development will be clarified further as our understanding of developmental neurobiology improves.
