Yaşlılık, önüne geçilmesi mümkün olmayan biyolojik, kronolojik, sosyal yönleri ve sorunları olan bir süreçtir. Yaşlıların dünya üzerinde genel nüfus içinde oranı hızla artış göstermektedir. Yaşlılık dönemi; bireylerin statü kaybettiği, bağımlılık ve kaza riskinin arttığı, fiziksel yeteneklerinin azaldığı, pek çok kronik hastalığın yaşandığı bir dönemdir. Yaşlılık döneminde görülen tüm bu sosyal ve bedensel değişimlerle birlikte son yıllarda dünya boyutunda tartışılan bir durum olan yaşlı istismarı ve ihmali konusu gündeme gelmiştir. Genel olarak yaşlı istismarı, yaşlı bireyin sağlık veya iyilik halini tehdit eden veya zarar veren herhangi bir davranıştır. Yaşlı istismarı, fiziksel, cinsel, psikolojik ve ekonomik istismar kadar ihmali de içerir. Bu çalışmada konunun önemini ve ciddiyetini vurgulayarak, bu konudaki eksiklikleri göstermek ve ilgili çevrelerin dikkatini çekmek amaçlanmıştır.

Growing old is a process with biologic, chronologic, and social aspects and problems that can not be avoided. The general population of elderly people in the world has been growing rapidly. The geriatric period is a time when an individual's status is lost, there is an increase in dependence and risk of accidents, a decrease in physical abilities, and many chronic illnesses are experienced. In addition to all of these social and physical changes that occur during the geriatric period, in recent [year]s there has been world-wide discussion of the issue of exploitation and neglect of the elderly. In general exploitation of the elderly is any kind of behavior that threatens or injuries the health or wellness of an elderly individual. Old person's abuse includes physical, sexual, psychological, financial abuses as well as neglect. This study is planned, to underline the seriousness and importance of the law, to clarify deficiencies of the law and to take attention of related people.
