Seçeneklerin çokluğu, hekime hangi tedavinin ne sıklıkta ve ne sırada uygulanacağı gibi yeni sorular ve sorumluluklar getirmektedir. Hekim, hastadaki intihar riski, tedaviye uyumu, psikososyal destek, stres faktörleri ve işlevsellikteki bozulmayı değerlendirerek, farmakoterapi, psikoterapi ya da somatik tedavilerden bir veya birkaçını seçerek tedaviye başlar. Farmakoterapi ve psikoterapideki amaçlar belirtilerin düzelmesi, psikososyal açıdan düzelme, tekrarlamaların engellenmesidir. Farmakoterapi ile birlikte kullanıldığında psikoterapiler bozukluğun yarattığı psikososyal sorunların çözümüne ve farmakotarepinin sürdürülmesine yardımcı olabilir. Psikoterapinin tek başına kullanımı hiç tedavi almayan hastalarda da etkin bulunmuştur. Ayrıca, psikoterapinin sürdürüm tedavisinde de yararlı olduğuna dair bilgiler mevcuttur.

Recently, there are many treatment alternatives for major depression disorders treatment. The majority of choices bring new questions and responsibilities to the physician like which treatment should be applied with what frequency, and order. By evaluating patient’s risk of committing suicide, adaptation of patient to the treatment, psychosocial support, stress factors and level of functionality, the physician starts treatment through selecting one or more methods among pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy or somatic treatments. The aims of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy are recovery of symptoms, psychosocial improvement, and prevention of recurrences. The application of psychotherapy with pharmacotherapy could assist management of psychosocial problems which are caused by disorder, and could provide maintenance of pharmacotherapy. The sole application of psychotherapy was found to be effective on patients who have never received treatment before. Besides, there is information about its utility on the maintenance treatment.
