Serotonin sendromu nadir görülen ancak hayatı tehdit eden ve fatal seyirli olabilen beklenmeyen bir reaksiyondur ve genellikle merkezi sinir sisteminde serotonin düzeylerini arttıran serotonerjik ajanlara bağlıdır. Otonom instabilite, mental durum değişiklikleri ve artmış nöromüsküler aktivite ile karakterizedir. Büyük ihtimalle, tarihte ilk kez 11. yüzyılda tanımlanmıştır. “Konvülzif ergotizm” olarak tanımlanmış olan bu hiperserotoninerjik durum, “Claviceps Purpurea” olarak adlandırılan bir mantarla kontamine olmuş çavdar bitkisinin tüketilmesiyle ilişkiliydi. Bu mantar 5-HT1 ve 5-HT2 reseptörlerini uyaran ergot alkaloidleri üretir. Bu yazıda serotonin sendromunun tarihi, epidemiyolojisi, etyolojisi, patoŞzyolojisi, klinik görünümü, tanısı, ayırıcı tanısı ve tedavisi, esas olarak güncel literatüre dayanarak gözden geçirilmektedir. Bu derlemenin ana hedefi, bu önemli klinik durumun erken tanısı ve yeterli tedavisi konusunda klinisyenlere yardımcı olmaktır

Serotonin syndrome is a rare but life-threatening and potentially fatal adverse reaction and it usually due to serotonergic agents, which increase the levels of serotonin in the central nervous system. It is characterized by autonomic instability, alteration in mental status and increased neuromuscular activity. It was probably Srst described in the 11th century. This hyperserotoninergic state which was described as “convulsive ergotism”, was associated with consumption of rye plants contaminated with a fungus named claviceps purpurea. This fungus produces ergot alkaloids that stimulate 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptors. In this paper, the history, epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical appearance, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment of serotonin syndrome will be reviewed, primarily based on the current literature. The main goal of this review is, to give support to clinicians for early diagnosing and sufficient treatment of this rare but important clinical condition
