Kişilerarası İlişkiler Terapisi (KİT) özellikle duygudurum bozukluklarının sağaltımında etkinliği gösterilmiş psikoterapilerden birisidir. Sınırlı-süreli ve yaşam olaylarına odaklanan KİT depresyonu medikal bir bozukluk olarak tanımlar ve hastanın duygudurum bozukluklarını güncel kişilerarası ilişki sorunları ile bağlantılandırır. Hastanın belirtilerini azaltmaya ve güncel kişilerarası ilişkilerini çözümleyebilmesi için gerekli sosyal becerileri kazanmasına yardımcı olur.
KİT, Sullivan’ın interpersonal kuramı, Bowlby’nin bağlanma kuramı ve sosyal rollerle ilgili çalışmalar üzerine temellenmiştir. KİT psikodinamik ve destekleyici psikoterapilerin birçok tekniğini benimsemektedir. Depresyon belirtilerini değerlendirmek, depresif belirtileri ilişkilerdeki sorunlarla ilişkilendirmek, “hasta rolü” vermek, sağaltımın odağını seçmek KİT’in ilk aşamasında geçekleştirilir. İkinci aşamada komplike yas, sosyal rollerde değişiklikler, kişilerarası ilişkilerde rol çatışması ve kişilerarası ilişkilerde yetersizlikler alanlarından birisine odaklanır. Son aşamada sağaltımın kazandırdıkları gözden geçirilir, hastanın güçlü yanları desteklenir.
KİT, 1970’li yıllarda geliştirilmesiyle birlikte yaygın olarak kullanılmış ve farklı bozukluklara da uygulanmıştır. Birçok randomize, kontrollü klinik çalışma KİT’in depresyon sağaltımında etkinliğini göstermiştir. KİT birçok ülkede uygulanmakta ve yeni bozukluklara uyarlama çalışmaları sürmektedir.

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) has demonstrated its efficacy particularly in the treatment of mood disorders. IPT is a time-limited and life-event based treatment that defines depression as a medical disorder, linking the patient’s mood symptoms to current interpersonal difficulties. IPT aims to help the patient build social skills to solve the current interpersonal problem.
IPT is based on the theories of Sullivan, attachment theory of Bowlby and empirical data related to social roles. IPT uses many techniques familiar to practitioners of dynamic and supportive forms of psychotherapy. In the initial phase of therapy, the symptoms of depression are assessed, the onset of the depressive episode is related to the interpersonal problems, the “sick role” is given and the treatment focus is chosen. Four problem areas of IPT are; grief (complicated bereavement), role transitions, role disputes and interpersonal deficits. The middle phase is devoted to work on the specific problem area with the goals of improving both the depressive symptoms and interpersonal problems. In the termination phase, the progress of patient is reinforced and the therapist calls attention to the patient’s successes and supports the patient’s competence to cope with new problems.
IPT has been widely employed since its development in the 1970’s and it’s efficacy in the treatment of mood disorders has been shown in multiple randomized, controlled clinical trials. IPT is employed in various countries and work is in progress toward adapting IPT for other disorders.
