Bipolar bozukluk tekrarlayıcı ve kronik bir seyir gösterir. Somatik tedavilerin bozukluk üzerine yüksek etkinlikleri, konu hakkındaki medikal modeli kuvvetlendirmiştir. Ancak hastaların yaklaşık yarısı tıbbi tavsiyenin aksine tedaviyi bir süre kesmekte, üçte biri ise birçok kez tedaviyi kendiliğinden sonlandırmaktadır.
Farmakoterapi bipolar bozuklukların tedavi stratejilerinde temel yol olmakla birlikte, on yıllık süreyi aşan çalışmalarda farmakoterapiye eklenen psikoterapilerin tedavi etkinliğini arttırdığı, depreşme ve yineleme sayısını azalttığını görmekteyiz. Yazıda özetlenmeye çalışılan yöntemlerden psiko-eğitim ve bilişsel davranışçı terapi, yinelemeleri azaltma açısından daha etkili görünmektedir. Farmakoterapi ve psikoterapiler bozukluğun iyileşmesinde ve yinelemelerin önlenmesinde birbirini tamamlayıcıdır. Bu iki tedavi yöneliminde yapılacak kombinasyonlar hastalarda daha yüksek bir işlevsellik düzeyi sağlayacaktır.

Bipolar disorder shows an intermittent and chronicle prognosis. Increasing usage of somatic treatments and their high activity on this disorder has enforced the medical model on this subject. But on the contrary of the medical advisements, nearly half of the patients stop the treatment for a while and one of third spontaneously stop the treatment more than once.
Pharmacotherapy is the main treatment strategy in bipolar disorder, however in the investigations that are going up over ten [year]s we have seen that psychotherapy added to pharmacotherapy increases treatment efficacy, and decreases recurrences and relapses. Psychoeducation and cognitive behavioral therapy that are summarized in the text seems more effective to decrease recurrence. Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy complete each other for treatment of the disorder and prevent from recurrence. The combinations that will be made in these two treatment strategies will provide higher functional levels for the patients.
