Bipolar bozukluk sık rastlanan bir psikiyatrik bozukluk olup hastalık dönemlerinde işlevsellikte belirgin bozulma ile seyredebilir. Nörofizyolojisi henüz tam olarak anlaşılmamış olmakla beraber, gelişmiş görüntüleme yöntemleri sayesinde gün geçtikte bu hastalığa ait bilgiler artmaktadır. Bipolar hastalarda bilişsel yetilerde ve affekt işlenmesinde değişimler daha önceki çalışmalarla belgelenmiştir. Bu hastalıkla ilgili patognomonik bir defisit bulunmamakla birlikte görüntüleme çalışmalarında ile bipolar hastalarda normal kontrollere kıyasla bazı beyin bölgelerinde anatomik yapıda ve işlevsel ağlarda farklılıklar gözlenmiştir.
Son yıllarda bu konuda dikkati çeken beyin bölgeleri, duygulanımın düzenlenmesinde rolü olduğu düşünülen prefrontal korteks yapıları, amigdala, hipokampus, superior temporal girus, bazal gangliyonlardır. Bu makalede bipolar bozuklukla ilgili olarak nöroanatomik ve işlevsel manyetik rezonans görüntüleme bulgularına değinilecektir.

Bipolar disorder is relatively a common disease in psychiatry which shows significant loss of functioning during the episodes. Although its neurophysiology is incompletely understood, advanced neuroimaging technics enlight us more and more about the disease. Alterations in cognitive functioning and affect regulation are documented in bipolar patients.
In the neuroimaging studies some brain areas and functional brain networks of the bipolar patients are found to be different from those of the normal controls although there is not a specific deficit which would be pathognomonic for bipolar disorder. Currently some brain areas which are thought to have a function in regulating the affect (i.e: Prefrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus, superior temporal gyrus, basal ganglia) have become points of interest. This article is about the neuroanatomic and functional magnetic resonance imaging findings in bipolar disorder.
