En etkin psikiyatrik tedavilerden biri olan EKT aynı zamanda psikiyatrinin en çok tartışılan konularından biri olmuştur. Bu yazıda EKTnin tarihçesi kısaca özetlendikten sonra bu tedaviye yönelik kamuoyu tepkileri, bu tepkiler sonucunda geliştirilen güvenlik önlemleri ve günümüzde etkinliği ve güvenliği arttırmaya yönelik gelişmeler tanıtılmıştır.
