İntihar psikolojik, biyolojik ve sosyal faktörlerle ilişkili kompleks bir fenomendir. İntihar kişinin yaşamına istemli olarak son vermesidir. İntiharlar ülkemizde ve dünyadaki pek çok ülkede önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunudur. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü’ne bağlı üye ülkeler yaşamı uzatma amacına yönelik olarak intiharları önleme hedefini belirlemişlerdir. İntiharları önlemek için bireysel, sosyal, ruhsal ve ekonomik risk faktörlerinin değerlendirilmesi gerekmektedir.
Polislik mesleği, en stresli mesleklerden biri olarak kabul edilmektedir. Bu mesleğe mensup kimseler; iş yükünün fazlalığı, çalışma koşulları ve güvenlik tehlikesi faktörlerinin etkisiyle, yoğun stres altında çalışmaktadırlar. Polislerde; stres oluşumundaki doğal etkilerin yanı sıra çok farklı stres kaynakları da rol oynamaktadır.
Bu makalede polis intiharları ile ilgili yapılan araştırma ve gözden geçirme yazıları incelenmiştir. Ayrıca klasik kaynaklardan da faydalanılarak intihar örüntüsü araştırılmıştır. Sistemdeki mevcut olumsuzlukların üstesinden gelebilme ve iyileştirme için gerekli çözüm yolları tartışılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, polisliğe başvuranların arasından en temel şart olarak gördüğümüz tarafsız, kendine güvenen, ruhi ve fiziki arızalardan uzak, dürüst ve yeterli eğitimi almış insanların seçilmesi tartışmanın temel noktasını oluşturmaktadır. Ayrıca araştırma sonucu elde edilen bulgular doğrultusunda polislerin intihara başvurma eğilimlerinin önceden fark edilmesi ve psikolojik rahatsızlığı tespit edilen memurların psikolojik danışmanlık ve rehberlik merkezlerinden sosyal destek almaları gerektiği hususuna dikkat çekilmiştir.

Suicide is a complex phenomenon associated with pyschological, biological and social factors. Suicide is the end up of person’s life voluntarly. Suicides are an important public health problem in our country and many other countries. The member of countries of the World Health Organization had determined the aim of prevention of suicides directed to the prolongation of life duration. To prevent the suicides it is necessary to evaluate the individual, social, emotional and economic risks.
It is accepted that police profession is one of the most stressful profession. The people working in this profession are under stress because of overloaded responsibility of a duty, working conditions and security danger. The stress of police has not only natural effects but also several stress resources.
This paper published research studies and reviews on police suicides have been reviewed. Furthermore, classical papers have been searched to obtain knowledge about suicide behavior and discusses how to overcome existing shortfalls of the system and solutions to improve it. Within this context, the very basic requirement of a potential Police Officer’s that they be, impartial, self-confident, free from physical and mental disabilities, honest and educationally qualified, constitutes the main discussion point in this paper. Furthermore, according to the results of this study the importance of determining the tendency to suicide and in case the police officers has any a psychological disease making sure they get social assistance from the psychological counseling and guiding center is underlined.
