Amaç: Sigara, alkol ve diğer maddelerin kullanımı ile ilgili çalışmalar daha çok okul çağı çocukluk döneminde olmak üzere normâl popülâsyonlarda yürütülmüştür. Çalışan çocuk ve adolesanlar bu maddeleri kullanma için önemli bir risk grubu olmasına karşın, konu ile ilgili çalışmalar bu gruplarda yetersizdir. Bu nedenle, Mersin çıraklık eğitim merkezinde eğitim gören çalışan adolesanlarda sigara, alkol ve diğer maddeleri kullanma prevelansı ve etkileyen risk faktörlerinin araştırılması amaçlandı. Yöntem: Kesitsel tipte planlanan bu çalışma 2002 yılında Mersin ÇEM’nde yapıldı. Çalışma grubuna okulda kaydı bulunan 1450 öğrencinin tamamı alındı. Veriler öğrenciler tarafı ndan doldurulan bir anket formu ve Çocuk Beck Depresyon Ölçeği kullanıldı. Verilerin özetlenmesinde tanımlayıcı istatistikler ve risk faktörlerinin belirlenmesinde Binary Lojistik Regresyon analizi kullanıldı. Bulgular: Çalışmaya 960’ı (%83.3) erkek ve yaş ortalaması 17.3±1.3 olan 1152 çırak katı ldı. Çıraklar arasında en az bir defa sigara, alkol ve illegal madde deneme prevelansının sırasıyla %45.7, %39.1 ve %4.2 olduğu saptandı. Tesbit edilen başlıca risk faktörlerinin; i) sigara deneme için; alkolle karşılaşmak, erkek olmak, âile içinde kavga olması ve çocuğun intihar girişimi, ii) alkol deneme için; erkek olmak, 18 yaş üzerinde olmak, sigara denemek, annenin sigara ve babanın alkol içmesi, âile içinde kavga-küfürleşme olması ve işyerinde kendisiyle alay edilmesi, iii) illegal madde deneme için intihar girişimi, alkol denemek, depresyon semptomları bulunması ve babanın sigara içmesi olduğu tespit edildi. Tartışma: Çırakların sigara, alkol ve illegal madde denemesi ile, âile ve iş yerindeki ortam arasında sıkı bir ilişki olduğu görülmektedir. Sonuç: Çırakların bu maddelerden korunması için yapılacak eğitimlerde âile, işyerindeki usta ve çocuk bir bütün olarak değerlendirilmelidir. Çocukların çalışma koşulları iyileştirilmeli ve psikolojik danışmanlık alabilecekleri birimler oluşturulmalıdır

Objective: Studies concerning the addiction of cigarette, alcohol and other substances have been conducted mainly on normal opulations, such as school age and childhood. Although the working children and adolescents constitute an important risk group in terms of the addiction to these substances, the number of the studies conducted on them is insufficient. For this reason, this study aimed at investigating the risk factors having impact on the prevalence of addiction of cigarette, alcohol and substances in the apprentices in the Mersin Vocational Training and Apprenticeship Center. Method: This study which was conducted in Mersin Vocational Training and Apprenticeship Center as a cross-sectional study. All of 1450 students in the center were included in the study. A questionnaire form filled by the parents and Children Beck Depression Scale was used. Binary Logistic Regression Analysis was used for the purpose of determining definitive statistics and risk factors in summarizing the data. Findings: 1152 apprentices including 960 (83.3%) boys attended the study and their mean age was 17.3±1.3. It was found that prevalence of trying cigarette, alcohol and illegal substances at least for once was respectively 45.7%, 39.1%, 4.2%. Some of the primary risk factors detected are as follows: i) for experience with cigarette: to use alcohol, to be a male, to come from a family where parents quarrel, to attempt to conduct suicide, ii) for experience with alcohol: to be a male, to be aged over 18, to try smoking, to have a mother or father with alcohol addiction, to come from a family where there is quarrel and Exchange of bad words and to be made fun in the workplace, iii) for the experience with illegal substances: to attempt suicide, to carry symptoms of depression, to try alcohol and to have a father with cigarette addiction. Discussion: It can be seen that there is close relationship between experience of smoking, alcohol and illegal substance by apprentices and their environment of their house and workplace. It is necessary that the master in the workplace, the family and the child should be evaluated as a whole in the trainings to be provided for the purpose pf protecting children from these substances. Conclusion: Working environment of the children should be improved and units of consultancy and guidance should be established.
