One of the most important problems of today's medicine is the retardation of the vital phenomena in cases of severe trauma, operations or infectious diseases which threaten the homeostasis of the organism that usually functions as an integral whole.
In this article we have tried to review the concept of such a retardation with reference to phenomenons like sleep, hypnotism, hibernation, fakirism or cadaveric rigidity, and artificial hibernation achieved through freezing.
