Bu araştırmada, dört yıllık koruyucu lityum sağaltımına çok iyi yanıt veren ya da yanıtsız kalan 29 ikiuçlu olgu incelenmiştir. Kötü yanıt ya da yanıtsızlıkla, literatüre uygun olarak hızlı devirli (rapid cycling) olma ilişkili bulunmuştur. Bunun dışında, sonuçlar lityum sağaltımının 5. günündeki serum magnezyumunun sağaltım öncesi değerden gösterdiği artışın iyi yanıtla; psikotik boyut varlığı ve hastalığın erken başlamasının ise kötü yanıtla ilişkili olabileceğim düşündürmüştür. Bu faktörler ve literatürde bildirilen, iyi yanıt-ailede duygulanım bozukluğu ilişkisinin, daha geniş hasta gruplarında daha ileri araştırılmaya gereksindiğini düşünmekteyiz.

This study investigates 29 bipolar patients who had shown excellent response or remained unresponsive to lithium during four [year]s of prophylactic lithium treatment. Rapid cycling was found to be related to unresponsivenes, which is consistent with the literature. The results suggested that an increase in serum magnesium level on the 5th day of lithium treatment could be associated with good response, and earlier onset of illness and the presence of a psychotic dimention with poor response to lithium. We suggest that these factors as well as the association of the presence of a family history of affective illness with good response, which is reported by other authors, need further investigation on a larger patient sample.
