Türkiye’nin en köklü partisi konumunda olan Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) kurulduktan itibaren uzun bir süre tek parti olarak iktidarını sürdürmüştür. Bu dönemde devrimler gerçekleşmiş, modern devlet kurma çalışmaları hız kesmeden devam etmiştir. Bu yıllarda modernleşmenin önünde en büyük engel olarak “din” görülmüş ve dini kontrol altına almaya yönelik çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Daha sonraki dönemlerde iktidar olmasa bile birçok durumda muktedir olduğunu göstermiş olup, dini faaliyetleri serbestleştirme çalışmalarını sekteye uğratmıştır. 2000’li yıllara kadar çeşitli koalisyonlarda yer alsa da tek başına iktidar olamamıştır. 2000’li yıllardan sonra karşısına güçlü bir rakip olarak Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (Ak Parti) çıkmış ve hep tek başına iktidar olmayı başarmıştır. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu 22 Mayıs 2010’da Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi Genel Başkanı seçilmiştir. Bu dönemden sonra CHP lideri dini faktörün önemli bir güç olduğunu görmüş ve partinin geçmişteki politikalarından farklı bir siyasi söylem ve politika geliştirmiştir. Önceki dönemlerin aksine din ve dini kurumları (tarikat ve cemaatler hariç) sahiplenmeye, toplumu birleştirme, bütünleştirme ve barıştırma gayretine girmiştir.

After this period, the leader of the CHP saw that the religious factor was an important power and developed a different political discourse and policy from the past policies of the party. Contrary to previous periods, it has tried to embrace religion and religious institutions (except sects and communities), to unite, integrate and reconcile the society.
