Amaç: Rolandik epilepsi (RE) çocukluğun idiyopatik parsiyel epilepsilerindendir. Tanımı gereği normâl nörolojik ve bilişsel işlevlerle beraber görülmesine rağmen, yapılan çalışmalarda sıklıkla nöropsikolojik anormâlliklere rastlanmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı günümüze kadar RE’li çocuk ve ergenlerin nöropsikolojik işlevleri üzerinde yapılan çalışmaların sonuçları nı eleştirel bir biçimde gözden geçirmektir. Yöntem: Elektronik veri tabanları “nöropsikoloji” ve “rolandik epilepsi” anahtar kelimeleri kullanılarak taranmış ve elde edilen çalışmalar eleştirel bir biçimde gözden geçirilmiştir. Bulgular: RE’li çocuk ve ergenlerde daha çok hastalık süresince olmak üzere dikkat, görsel- motor işlevler, yürütücü işlevler, sözel kısa dönem hâfıza ve konuşma bozuklukları saptanmıştır. Tartışma: RE’deki bozukluklar geçici olsa bile günlük işlevlerle etkileşebilir ve uyumu bozabilir. Ayrıca bu bozukluk Landau-Kleffner Sendromu (LKS) ve uykuda elektriksel status epileptikus (continuous spikes and waves in slow sleep, CSWS) ile ilişkili olabilir. Sonuç: Klinik pratikte bu hastaların düzenli olarak nöropsikolojik değerlendirilmesine ve RE’deki işlev bozukluklarını kesin bir biçimde gösterebilmek için metodolojik açıdan daha sağlam prospektif çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.

Objective: Rolandic epilepsy (RE) is one of the idiopathic partial epilepsies of childhood. By definition, it is seen with normal neurological and cognitive function. However, neuropsychological abnormalities were commonly found in studies. The purpose of this study is to critically review the results of studies done up to date on the neuropsychological functions of children and adolescents with RE. Method: Electronic databases are searched with the keywords “neuropsychology” and “rolandic epilepsy” and the results are critically reviewed. Findings: Deficits in attention, visual-motor functions, executive functions, verbal short term memory and [language] were noted in children and adolescents with RE, especially in the active phase. Discussion: Deficits in RE, although probably temporal, can hamper daily functions and may disturb adaptation. Also, this disorder may be related with Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) and Continuous Spikes and Waves in Slow sleep (CSWS). Conclusion: Systematic neuropsychological assessment of these patients is needed inclinical practice along with prospective, methodologically sound studies to clearly show the functional deficits in RE.
