Elektrokonvülsif tedavi son yıllarda pek çok psikiyatrik tablonun düzeltilmesinde biyolojik psikiyatri açısından oldukça önemli bir yer işgal etmiştir. EKT'ın etki mekanizmasını açıklamak için oldukça fazla sayıda nere endokrin ve nörokimyasal çalışma yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmada EKT ve nöroendokrin hormonlar arasındaki bağlantı gözden geçirilmiştir.

The fact that a series of electrically induced seizures may so effectively alleviate the most severely disturbed mood states is one of the most intriguing phenomena in biological psychiatry. Of the major theories seeking to explain this remarkable clinical effect, neurochemical and neuroendocrine mechanisms have been the most intensively investigated. In this study, the studies about the relation between ECT and neuroendocrine hormones will be reveiwed.
