Amaç: Ergenlerin beden görünümlerindeki bir bozulma ya da buna dair algıları psikolojik sorunlarla ilgili olabilir. Bu çalışmada lise öğrencilerinin boy ve kilo değerleri ve bunlarla ilgili algılarının benlik saygısı, sosyal anksiyete ve umutsuzluk üzerine etkileri incelenecektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Ankara’daki 10 lisede 9-12. sınıflarda öğrenim gören 1.025 ergenin boy ve kilo gibi antropometrik ölçümleri yapıldı. Öğrencilerden Beck Umutsuzluk Ölçeği (BUÖ), Rosenberg Benlik Saygısı Ölçeği (RBSÖ) ve Çocuklar için Sosyal Anksiyete Ölçeği (ÇSAÖ) doldurmaları istendi. Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan öğrenciler beden kitle endeksi verilerine göre düşük kilolu, normal kilolu ve fazla kilolu-obez olarak üç gruba ayrıldı. BUÖ ve ÇSAÖ puanlarının düşük kilolu olanlarda ve kilolu-obez olanlarda normal kiloda olanlardan yüksek olma eğiliminde olduğu gözlenirken aradaki fark anlamlılık düzeyine ulaşmadı. Medyan ÇSAÖ puanları ise hem kızlarda hem de erkeklerde kısa boylu olanlarda normal boyda olanlardan yüksekti. Fazla kilolu olduğunu düşünen öğrencilerin medyan RBSÖ ve ÇSAÖ puanları normal kiloda olduğunu düşünenlerden istatistiksel anlamlı olarak daha yüksek bulundu. Kısa boylu olduğunu düşünenlerin medyan RBSÖ ve ÇSAÖ puanları normal boyda olduğunu düşünenlerden yüksek bulundu. Sonuç: Çalışmamızın sonuçları, kısa boylu olan, boyunun kısa olduğunu düşünen ve kilolu olduğunu düşünen ergenlerin ruhsal bozukluk gelişmesi riski altında olduğunu düşündürmektedir. Bu ergen grubuna yönelik danışmanlık faaliyetleri ruhsal hastalıkların gelişmesini önleyebilir ya da ruhsal hastalık geliştirenler erken dönemde fark edilerek psikiyatrik yardım almaları sağlanabilir

Objectives: A deterioration in adolescents’ body appearance or their perception of this may be related to psychological problems. This study examined the effects of high school students’ height, weight, and related perceptions on their self-esteem, social anxiety, and hopelessness. Materials and Methods: Anthropometric measurements were performed for 1,025 adolescents in 10 high schools in Ankara. The students were asked to fill out the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SACS). Results: The students were categorized into three groups by their body mass indices: underweight, normal weight, and overweight-obese. BHS and SACS scores in underweight and overweight-obese individuals tended to be higher than in those with normal weight, but the difference did not reach statistical significance. The median SACS scores were higher in both girls and boys with short stature than those with normal height. The median RSES and SACS scores of students who thought they were overweight were significantly higher than those who thought they were at a normal weight. The median RSES and SACS scores of those who thought they were short were higher than those who thought they were of normal height. Conclusion: The study suggests that adolescents who are short or think they are short or overweight are at risk for developing mental disorders. Counseling activities for this adolescent group can prevent the development of mental illnesses, and thus, those who develop mental illness can be noticed early and receive psychiatric help.
