İnsanın kendini ve diğerlerini anlama ve anlamlandırma çabası insanın varoluşu kadar eskidir. İnsanlık tarihine baktığımızda gerek insanın içsel dünyasını, duygularını anlamak, gerekse toplumsal düzenin devamı için ‘olması gerekli görülen’ insan modelini tanımlamak ve insanın hem bireysel iyiliği hem de toplumsal düzenin devamını sağlamaya yönelik birçok yaklaşım ortaya konmuştur. Bu yaklaşımlarda insan nedir sorusunu yanıtlayan bir insan anlayışı ve insan ne için vardır sorusunu yanıtlayan bir ideal insan anlayışı vardır. İnsana dair bu soruların cevapları felsefe, kültür ve dini inançlar perspektifinde benzerlik ve farklılıklar göstermektedir. Genel anlamıyla bu yaklaşımlar insanı iyi - kötü, güzel - çirkin, olgun - cahil, sağlıklı - hasta, uyumlu - uyumsuz gibi zıt kutuplarda değerlendirir ve birbirinden farklı bu iki kutup arasındaki süreci irdeler. Bu yaklaşımların ortak bir kabulü olarak diyebiliriz ki insan değişebilen ve gelişebilen bir varlıktır. Ancak insanda bu değişimi oluşturan faktörler nelerdir sorusu hala cevabını aramakta ve bununla ilgili çeşitli hipotezler üretilmektedir. Tarih boyunca insan, dışsal (çevresel) sorunlarına çözüm aradığı gibi içsel - duygusal sorunlarına da çözüm arayışında olmuştur. Bunun için birçok inanç, kültür ve sonrasında da bilim kendi terapötik yöntemlerini oluşturmuştur. İnsanlığın süregelen bu deneyimsel mirasından tasavvuf ve psikoterapiyi ele aldığımızda, insanın değişim ve gelişimi açısından ortak noktaları olduğunu görmek mümkündür.

Man’s effort to understand himself and others is as old as human existence. When we look at the history of humanity, many theories have been put forward to understand human emotions and define a human model. In these theories, there is a human understanding that answers the question of what is human, and an ideal human understanding that answers the question of what human is for.The answers to these questions about human beings show similarities and differences from the perspective of philosophy, culture and religious beliefs. Generally speaking, these theories evaluate people in opposite poles such as good-bad, beautiful-ugly, mature-ignorant, sickhealty, harmonious-incompatible and examine the process between these two different poles. As a common acceptance of these approaches, we can say that human beings can change and develop. However, the question of what are the factors that create this change in human beings is still seeking the answer and various hypotheses related to this are produced. Throughout history, people have sought solutions to their emotional problems as well as their environmental problems. For this many beliefs, cultures and later science created their own therapeutic methods. When we consider sufism and psychotherapy from this ongoing legacy of humanty, we see that they have common points in terms of human change and development.
