Destekleyici psikoterapi geçen yüzyılın başlarında geliştirilmiştir. Temel hedefi, psikanalizin aksine, kişilik değişimi değildir. Adından da anlaşılacağı üzere, destekleyici psikoterapi, hastayı çeşitli şekillerde desteklemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Destekleyici psikoterapi bilinçdışı çatışmalar üzerine yorumlar yapmak, erken dönemde yaşanan örseleyici deneyimlerin etkilerini araştırmak veya hastanın kendisi ve dünya üzerine yerleşik inançlarını bulmak yerine, önde gelen güncel sorunlara ve açık terapötik hedeflere yönelir. Hastanın çeşitli yaşamsal zorluklarla etkili bir şekilde baş etme becerisini güçlendirmek destekleyici psikoterapinin öncelikli hedeflerindendir. Destekleyici psikoterapi, aynı zamanda, hastanın çeşitli durumlar için uyum yeteneğini arttırmaya yönelik bir psikoterapi uygulamasıdır. Destekleyici psikoterapinin, seans süresi ve sıklığı, görüşme mekanının özellikleri gibi terapötik çerçeve özelliklerinin görece esnekliği, terapistin yanıtlayıcı olabilmesi ve kullanılan destekleyici müdahale teknikleri ve uyuma yönelik psikoterapötik hedefleri dikkate alındığında, ruh sağlığı alanında poliklinik hizmeti sunulan kurumlarda etkin olarak kullanılması mümkündür.

Supportive psychotherapy was developed at the beginning of the last century. Unlike psychoanalysis, the main goal is not personality change. As the name suggests, supportive psychotherapy aims to support the patient in a variety of ways. Rather than attempt to provide elegant interpretations to previously unconscious conflicts, explore the impact of childhood wounds, or change deeply-ingrained maladaptive beliefs about yourself or the world, supportive psychotherapy is geared towards more basic and straightforward therapeutic goals. Essentially, one of the primary goals of supportive psychotherapy is to strengthen the patient’s ability to cope effectively with various life stressors. Supportive psychotherapy is also intended to help patients increase their ability to adapt to various situations. Supportive psychotherapy can be helpful to a wide range of patients. However, it is especially ideal for the following types of individuals: those who are focused on surviving as opposed to self-actualizing (e.g. individuals with a chronic physical or mental illness), individuals who are going through an acute crisis in their lives and doing their best to simply get through it, individuals who currently lack a solid support system and are struggling to cope with a challenging situation, individuals who would not respond well to therapy designed to bring about any type of fundamental change. Supportive psychotherapy is aimed at preventing the recurrence of severe mental disorders, helping the patient cope with symptoms, or ensuring that persons without severe mental impairment can be removed from the crisis and their premorbid level of adaptation can be restored. One of its possible application areas is its utilization in outpatient services in our country.
