Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amaçları, sosyal fobi risk faktörlerini belirlemek ve sosyal fobi ile depresyon, öz-kavram, sigara alışkanlığı arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktır.
Yöntem: Bu çalışmaya yaşları 13 ile 17 arasnda değişen 486 ergen dahil edilmiştir. Sosyodemografik özellikler ve risk faktörleri ergenlerde sosyal fobinin klinik özelliklerini belirleme amacıyla oluşturulmuş, yapılandırılmış bir soru listesiyle elde edildi. Tüm ergenlere ek olarak Çocuklar için Depresyon Ölçeği, Çocuklar için Piers-Harris Öz-kavram Ölçeği ve Çapa Çocuk ve Ergenler için Sosyal Fobi Ölçeği uygulandı. Bulgular: Çalışmada elde edilen kesme puanına sosyal fobi sıklığı %14.4'dü. Sosyal fobi ile depresyon arasında pozitif korelasyon olmasına karşın (r=.447, p=0,001), sosyal fobi ile öz-kavram arasında negatif korelasyon (r=-.456, p=0,001) vardı. Kekemelik, tik veya basit fobisi olanlarda sosyal fobi puanı daha yüksekti. Ayrıca, sosyal fobiye sahip olan ergenlerde sigara içme yaşı daha düşüktü (p=.03). Tartışma: Çalışmanın sonuçları sosyal fobinin erken ergenlik döneminde başladığını, sosyal fobinin depresyon, düşük özgüven ve erken yaşta sigara içme alışkanlığını etkileyebileceğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca, ergenlerde sosyal aktiviteye katılımın sosyal fobi için koruyucu bir faktör olabileceği sonucuna varıldı.

Objectives: The aims of the study were to investigate risk factors of
social phobia and associations between social phobia and
depression, self-concept, smoking habit in adolescents.
Material and methods: A total of 486 adolescents were included in
this study. The age range varied between 13 and 17 [year]s.
Sociodemographic characteristics and risk factors were obtained via
structured questionnaires designed to determine the presence and
clinical characteristics of social phobias in adolescents. In addition,
the Child Depression Inventory, Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale for
Children, Çapa Social Phobia Scale for Child and Adolescent were
administered to all adolescents participating into the study.
Results: The frequency of social phobia was 14.4% according to cutoff
point found in this study. Although there was positive correlation
between social phobia and depression (r=.447, p=0,001), there was
negative correlation between social phobia and self-concept
(r=-.456, p=0,001). The presence of stuttering, tics or simple phobia
are correlated with higher levels of social phobia scores. In addition,
the age of onset for cigarette smoking was earlier in adolescents
having social phobia (p=.03).
Conclusions: This study demonstrated that social phobia usually
starts early in teenage [year]s and social phobia significantly affects the
development of depression, low self-concept, early age smoking
habit in adolescents. In addition, participation to social activities could
be a protective factor from social phobia in adolescents.
