Travma sonrası stres bozukluğu (TSSB) olağan insan deneyimlerinin oldukça dışında yaşanan bir olay/stresör ardından gelişen tipik psişik belirtilerle giden bir tablodur. Olağan dışı olay/stresör'den kastedilen, bireyin yaşamını veya fizik bütünlüğünü tehdit eden durum ve deneyimlerdir. Benzeri deneyimler halen Türkiye'nin güneydoğu bölgesinde görev yapan ve zaman zaman ölümle sonuçlanabilen sıkıntı ve kaygı verici terörist saldırılara hedef olan Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri personeli için de geçerli olmaktadır.
Bu çalışma yaşamı ve fizik bütünlüğü tehdit edici boyutu giderek artan güneydoğudaki olayların, askeri popülasyonda görülen TSSB olgularında bir artışa neden olup olmadığını araştırmak amacıyla yürütülmüştür. Güneydoğudaki askeri birliklerden GATA psikiyatri kliniği'ne 1992 yılı içinde refere edilen olgular çalışmaya alınmıştır. Çalışma, bozukluğun ortaya çıkışında travma ile premorbid duyarlılık etkenleri arasındaki ilişkiyi, olgulardaki semptom örüntülerini incelemek, bozukluğun oluşturduğu yeti yitimi düzeyini araştırmak ve TSSB'na eşlik eden diğer psikiyatrik bozuklukların türünü saptamak amacıyla yürütülmüştür. Çalışmada ayrıca bozukluğun ortaya çıkış biçimi, tipleri ve olguların demografik özellikleri gözden geçirilmiştir.

Post-traumatic stres disorder (PTSD) is character­ised by the typical psychiatric symptoms that emerge following a distressing event that is outside the range of usual human experience. These events include any serious threat to a person's life of physical integrity. Similar experiences are ex­perienced by the members of the Turkish Armed Forces, who work in the southeastern region of Turkey and are under the threat of continual ter­rorist attacts, which often prove to be fatal and cause great distress and anxiety. This study investigates the possibility of a rise in the numbers of PTSD cases in the military staff due to the increasing life threatening events that occur in the southeastern region of Turkey. Re­ferrals made from the South-East military sample to the Psychiatry Department of Gülhane Military Academy, the main military hospital in Turkey, in the [year] 1992 are investigated. The study com­pares and contrasts the role of the trauma and premorbid vulnerability factors, investigates the severity of symptoms, the degree of disability caused by the disorder, the range of concurrent psychiatric disorders along with PTSD, the differ­ent onset patterns of the morbidity and the demographical characteristics of the cases.
