Freud'un öncü niteliğindeki buluşundan beri, Batılı toplumlarda psikanalizin kuram ve teknikler yönünden sürekli bir biçimde geliştirildiğine tanık olmaktayız. Buna karşın, bu kuram ve yöntemlerin Doğulu toplumlara uygulanıp uygulanamayacağı sorusu hep geçerli bir sorun olarak kalmaktadır. Yazar, Dünya Psikiyatri Birliği'nin 1982'deki Kiyoto Bölge Sempozyumunda, Kore toplumunun zihniyetindeki (mentality) farklılıkların psikoterapi alanında klasik-Batılı terapi modellerinden farklı yaklaşımları gerektirdiği tezini kanıtlamaya çalışmaktadır.
