Bu makalenin amacı, epilepsisi olan bireylerin (EOB) en yaygın olarak yaşadıkları psiko-sosyal sorunların bir derlemesini yapmaktır. İlk sorun olarak, EOB'in günlük yaşam aktivitelerini, beklenen sosyal rol ve işlevleri yerine getirirken yaşadıkları problemler, spesifik olarak evlilik, iş ve günlük yaşam aktivitelerinde epilepsiden kaynaklana sıkıntılar ele alınmıştır. İkinci olarak da, EOB'in psikolojik iyilik hallerine dair sıkıntılar, özellikle depresyon, depresyonla ilintili diğer olumsuz öğeler ve depresyonun sonuçlarından bahis edilmiştir. Üçüncü olarak, stigma konusu irdelenmiştir. Farklı stigma tipleri, toplumun EOB'e karşı tutumu, EOB'in ne oranda stigma belirttikleri ve stigmayı yordayan değişkenler bu kısma dahil edilmiştir. Son olarak da, stigmayla baş etmek için en yaygın strateji olarak kullanılan, hastalığı saklama davranışı ve bunun EOB'in yaşamları üstündeki bedeli ele alınmıştır.

This paper aimed to review the psycho-social problems that are commonly experienced by people with epilepsy (PWE). The first problem is related with fulfilling the daily living activities, expected social roles and functions, specifically; issues related to marriage, employment and concerns caused by epilepsy. The second one is problems related to the psychological wellbeing of PWE, specifically depression and the negative correlates and consequences of depression. As for the third part, issues related with stigma are discussed. Different types of stigma, attitudes of society toward PWE, how much perceived stigma PWE reported and the variables which explain stigma are included. Finally, concealment of epilepsy as the most common strategy to deal with stigma and its cost to the lives of PWE is discussed.
