Depresyon son yıllarda tüm dünyada hızla artan bir sıklıkta görülmektedir. Depresyonun gelişim doğası çok faktörlüdür. Depresyon gelişimine psikolojik, genetik, çevresel ve biyolojik birçok etmenin katkısı olmaktadır. Depresyon ülkeler ve kültürler arasında görülme sıklığı açısından çeşitli farklılıkları olsa da tüm dünyada en sık görülen psikiyatrik bozukluktur. Ciddi bir halk sağlığı sorunu olan depresyon uygun tedavi edilmediği takdirde yüksek tedavi maliyetleri, iş gücü kaybı, morbidite ve mortalite oranları ile önemli toplumsal sorunlara sebep olabilmektedir. İşsizlik, yoksulluk, sınıfsal ayrım, göç, cinsiyet rolleri, travmatik aile yaşantıları, stresli olaylar depresyon gelişmesi ve devam etmesinde rol oynayan önemli ekonomik ve toplumsal gerçeklerdir. Depresyonun biyolojik yönü ile birlikte sosyal ve kültürel boyutunun da ele alındığı bütüncül bir bakış açısı ile değerlendirileceği kapsamlı çalışmalara ihtiyaç olduğu açıktır.

Depression, which is a serious public health problem, can lead to significant social problems with high treatment costs, job loss, morbidity and mortality rates if not properly treated. Unemployment, poverty, class distinction, migration, gender roles, traumatic family experiences, stressful events are important economic and social realities that play a role in developing and sustaining depression. It is clear that there is a need for comprehensive studies that will be evaluated with a holistic view of depression's biological as well as social and cultural dimension.
