Sağlığın tanımında fiziksel ve ruhsal iyi olma hali yanında geçen üçüncü boyut olan sosyal iyilik hali ruh sağlığı alanında çalışan araştırmacılar tarafından yeterince ilgi görmemiştir. Sosyal iyilik hali genel sağlık ve ruh sağlığıyla yakından ilişkilidir, ancak henüz tam bir tanımı yapılabilmiş değildir. Sosyal iyilik hali ile ilişkili kavramların çok çeşitli olması karmaşa oluşturmaktadır. Çoğu çalışmada sosyal iyilik sağlığın sosyal boyutu olarak değil, sağlığın bir ön koşulu olarak alınmıştır. Sosyal iyilik, gelir, gelir dağılımı, eğitim, gibi sosyal yapısal değişkenlerden çok sosyal ilişkiler ağının nitelikleri ile ilgilidir. Sosyal iyilik üzerine yapılacak çalışmalar toplumun örgütlenişi ve toplumun sınıfsal yapısının iyi tanınmasını gerektirir. Sosyal iyilik halinin tanımı ancak böylece kuramsal bir temele oturabilir. Bunun için ruh sağlığı alanında çalışan araştırmacıların sosyal bilimlerle ilişki içinde çok disiplinli çalışmalar yapması önerilebilir.

Social well-being, which is the third dimension in the definition of health besides physical and mental well-being, has not attracted the interest of mental health researchers. Social wellbeing is closely related to general and mental health, however a thorough definition of it has not been done yet. The high variability of concepts related to social well being causes complexity. Social wellbeing has been taken as a condition of health rather than the social dimension of health in many studies. Social well-being is the quality of social network of relationships rather than social structural variables such as income, income distribution and education. Studying on social well-being requires a well recognition of the organization and class structure of the society. Then the definition of social- well being can be based on a theoretical basis. To achieve this, mental health professionals can be suggested to perform multidisciplinary studies in collaboration with social scientists.
