Hastanın durumu, yoğun iş yükü ve deneyimsizlik merhamet yorgunluğu için risk faktörüdür. Merhamet yorgunluğuyla baş etme bireysel ve kurumsal olmak üzere iki düzeyde ele alınmalıdır.

Cancer patients and their families need intensive physical and psychological care. Due to care the oncology nurses are witness of the cancer patients and their families sorrows, despair and feelings of them due to the cancer. They need close physical and psychological care. Compassion fatigue is seen as the cost of this close care. The patient's condition, intense workload and inexperience are risk factors for empathy fatigue. Coping with compassion fatigue must be addressed at two levels, individual and institutional.
