Son yıllarda ruh sağlığı alanındaki gelişmeler, kronik ruhsal hastalığı olan bireylerin toplum içinde bakımını olanaklı kılarak, ailelerin hastanın yaşamında anahtar rol üstlenmelerini sağlamıştır. Kronik psikiyatri hastaları için özellikle önemli olan aile üyelerinin desteği, sadece hastanın fiziksel ve duygusal işlevselliğini sağlamakla kalmayıp, aynı zamanda hastayı tedavi sürecine katılma ve sağlığa uygun davranışları benimseme konusunda cesaretlendirmektedir. Aile üyelerinin tedavi ve hastalığa yönelik tutumu, algısı hastanın uyumunu etkileyen bir faktördür. Bu yönüyle aile hem hastanın tedaviye uyumunu etkileyen hem de hasta bireyin tedaviye uyumsuzluğundan etkilenen konumdadır. Ailelerin hasta bakımındaki rolünün öneminin artmasıyla birlikte ruhsal toplumsal girişimlere paralel olarak ruhsal eğitim ve aile eğitimi gibi çeşitli aile müdahale programları geliştirilmiştir. Sonuç itibariyle psikiyatri alanında hizmet veren hemşirelerin bu müdahaleler konusunda bilgi sahibi olması ve ailelere yönelik girişimlerde bulunması oldukça büyük önem taşımaktadır. Psikiyatri hemşiresinin, ailelere bireysel ve grup psikoeğitimi ve diğer müdahaleleri planlamak suretiyle profesyonel destek sağlaması hasta ve aile sonuçlarını etkileyecektir.

Recent developments in mental health have enabled the care of individuals with chronic mental illness in the community allowing their families to play a vital role in their lives. The support of family members, which is particularly important for chronic psychiatric patients, not only ensures the physical and emotional functioning of the patient but also encourages the patient to participate in the treatment process and adopt appropriate health behaviors. Attitude and perception of family members towards treatment and illness are one of the determining factors for a patient's treatment compliance. Eventually, families with low level of attitude and perception will be adversly affected by the treatment incompatibility of the patient. Increasing importance of the family role in patient treatment, in parallel with spiritual social initiatives, have led to development of various family intervention programs such as psycho-education and family-education. It is of utmost importance that psychiatry nurses are knowledgeable about these intervention programs and are apt to take part in initiatives directed towards patients' families. Thus, it is important for a psychiatric nurse to provide professional support by planning individual and group psychoeducation and supportive interventions for the families.
