Süreğen ilerleyici nörolojik hastalıklarda psikolojik sorunların yaygınlığı bilinmektedir. Bu tür hastalıkların başlangıçları genellikle anidir. Hastalar korkutucu işlev kayıplarıyla ve belirsiz bir sonlanışla yüz yüze gelirler. Bazı hastalıklar ciddi bir toplumsal damgalanma getirir. Bu sorunlar hastayı olduğu kadar hastanın yakınlarını da etkilemekte; tanı, tedavi ve sonlanış ile ilgili bilgilendirme, kararlara onam verme, tedavinin reddi gibi hakları, beyin ölümü, ötanazi ve organ aktarımı gibi e tik sorunları da beraberinde getirmektedir. Etik sorunların açık uçlu sorunlar olduğu unutulmamalıdır. Hasta ve yakınları açısından en önemli ve en gerekli şey, her olayın kendine özgü olduğunun kabul edilmesi, her olayın ayrı ayrı değerlendirilmesi ve en uygun çözümlerin benimsenmesidir. Bu etik sorunların daha çok tartışılması gereklidir, çünkü tartışmayı ihmal etmediğimiz her etik sorun, bizleri gelecekte yeni etik sorunları çözümlemede daha deneyimli kılacaktır.

It is known that psychological problems are common in cronically progressive neurologic diseases. Such a disease has usually sudden onset and patients are faced with frightening functional losses and the uncertainity of prognosis. Some diseases carry a severe social stigma. These problems affect relatives of patients as well as patients themselves, and also bring ethical problems such as rights of being informed about diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, giving consent to decisions, refusing the treatment, brain death, eutenesia, organ transplantation etc... It should not been forget that ethical problems are open-ended questions. The most important and most necessary thing for patients and their relatives is that is accepted that every event is special itself, every event is examined carefully separately and is taken on most appropriate solutions. Further discussions are needed on these ethical problems, because every ethical problem that we don't neglect to discuss, make us more experienced on the solving new ethical problems.
