Review of the Terms Used in Sexual Dysfunctions
Objective. Growing knowledge on sexual dysfunctions which were included in the psychiatric classifications in the last 30 years, requires the terms used in sexual dysfunctions to be reviewed. Method. The literature of the period from 1981 to 1995 was reviewed and if the terms, "impotence", and "frigidity" were used or not in the abstract/title of the psychiatric and other than the psychiatric articles. Results. The term "frigidity" has been left both in psychiatric and other medical articles. The term "impotence" has been still used in the medical articles but gradually decrease in the psychiatric articles after the [year] 1990.
Discussion. The term "frigidity" has broad and indefinite meaning and has been left by the physcians. The other term "impotence" has also indefinite and broad me- , aning but has not been left still. It has been generally used by the physcians other than the psychiatrists. According to us, the term "erectil dysfunction" define this problem better than the term "impotence". Also the term "involuntary ejaculation" or "uncontrolled ejaculation" would be better instead of the term "premature ejaculation" as defining a problem that originated from lack of the voluntary control on the ejaculation reflex rather than the ejaculation duration.
