Gerekçe: Aleksitimi kavramı psikosomatk hasta­ların duygularını tanıma ve onları söze dökme konusunda yetersiz kaldıkları düşüncesinden türediyse de, aieksitiminin çeşitli psikiyatrik hasta gruplarında da yaygın olduğu bulunmuştur. Aieksitiminin intihar girişiminde bulunan bireylerde yaygınlığı üzerine yeterli sayıda çalışma yoktur. Bu çalışmada intihar girişiminde bulunan bireylerde aleksitimi ölçümünün ek bir bilgi sağlayıp sağlamayacağı sınanmak istenmiştir. Yöntem: Vakıf Gureba Eğitim Hastanesi Acil Servisi'ne başvuran 30 hastaya klinik görüşme sonrasında Zung Depresyon ve Toronto Aleksitimi Ölçekleri verilmiştir. Yaş, cins ve sosyoekonomik düzey açısından uyumlu yirmi kişilik bir kontrol grubu da çalışmaya alınmıştır. Sonuçlar: İntihar girişiminde bulunan deneklerde depresyon ve aleksitimi ölçeğinden alman puanlar anlamlı derecede yüksektir. TAÖ'nin ilk üç alt boyutunda intihar girişiminde bulunan denekler anlamlı derecede yüksek puanlar almışlardır, dördüncü alt boyut açısından anlamlı bir fark yok­tur. Depresyon ve aleksitimi puanlan arasında anlamlı bir bağıntı yoktur. Yineleyen intihar girişiminde bulunan denekler ilk kez girişimde bulunan deneklere göre daha depresif ve alekstimiktir ancak aradaki fark anlamlı değildir. Tartışma: Aleksitiminin intihar girişimlerinde yaygın olduğu ve depresyona bağlı olarak gelişmediği bulunmuştur. Aleksitiminin intihar için bir risk etkeni olup olmadığı ise daha kapsamlı bir çalışma deseniyle ortaya konulabilir.

Objective: Although the concept of alexithymia stemmed from observations of psychosomatic patients' inability to realize and verbalize their feel­ings, it was later found that alexithymia is also prevalent in some psychiatric disorders. There is not enough data on tile prevalence of alexithymia in suicide attempters. The aim of this study is to test whether measuring alexithymia in suicide attempters may provide any information for the assessment of suicide risk. Method: 30 suicide attempters brought to Vakif Gureba Hospital Emergency Department were assessed with Zung Depression Scale and Toronto Alexithymia Scale after clinical evaluation. Control group comprised of 20 healthy individuals matched for age, sex and socioeconomic status. Results: Depression and alexithymia scores were higher in the suicide attempters and the difference was statistically significant. In the first three sub-scales of TAS suicide attempters scored higher and there was no statistically significant difference in the fourth subscale. There was not a significant correlation between depression and alexithymia scores. Recurrent attempters were more alexithymic and depressive than those with one attempt but the difference was not significant. Discussion: Alexithymia is prevalent in suicide at­tempters and it is not influenced by depression. Whether alexithymia is a risk factor for suicide may be assessed with a more -detailed study design.
