Effectiveness of Behavioral and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies on Generalized Anxiety Disorder : A review
In this article, research related to relative effectiveness of behavioral and cognitive-behavioral therapies on Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are reviewed. There appears to be three groups of conclusions reached by different studies; these are: 1-Behavioral and cognitive-behavioral therapies are equally effective both at the end of the treatment and at follow-up; 2-Behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapies are equally effective at the end of the treatment but at follow-up cognitive-behavioral therapy is more effective than behavioral therapy; 3-Cognitive-behavioral therapy is more effective than behavior therapy both at the end of the treatment and at follow-up. These contradictory results are discussed in terms of methodological/theoretical differences of the studies; and difficulties related to the nature of psychotherapy outcome research.
