Many lines of research converge to point towards involvement of limbic and brainstem structures in the aetiology of panic attacks. The locus ceruleus and raphe nucleus, located in the brainstem with afferent and efferent connections to the limbic system, are thought to be involved in panic disorder. Since the weight of data would seem to locate panic attacks to limbic and brainstem structures, electrophysiological recordings have been focused on this part of the central nervous system. So far, patients with panic disorder have been investigated by using electroencephalographic recordings, brainstem auditory evoked potentials and auditory event-related potentials. Results of these electrophysiological research support neuroanatomical hypothesis of panic disorder.

Birçok çalismanin sonuçlari panik atagin etiolojisinde limbik ve beyinsapi yapilarinin rol oynadigini göstermektedir. Beyinsapina yerlesik olan ve limbik sistemle afferent ve efferent baglantilari olan locus ceruleus ile raphe çekirdeklerinin panik bozuklugun olusumunda önemli olduklari düsünülmektedir. Mevcut bilgilerin agirligi panik ataklari bu yapilara lokalize ediyor gibi görünmesinden dolayi elektrofizyolojik çalismalar santral sinir sisteminin bu bölgelerine yogunlasmis bulunmaktadir. simdiye kadar panik bozuklugu olan hastalarda elektroansefalografi, beyinsapi isitsel uyarilma potansiyelleri ve olaya bagli geç uyarilma potansiyelleri çalismalari yapilmistir. Bu elektrofizyolojik çalismalarin sonuçlari panik bozuklugun nöroanatomik hipotezini desteklemektedir.
