Ziprasidon, şizofreni tedavisinde yüksek terapötik etkinlik ve tolerabilite profili gösteren benzizothiazol piperazin türevi yeni bir antipsikotiktir. Ziprasidon yüksek bir 5-HT2A'd2 reseptör bağlanma oranına sahiptir ve 5-HT1A reseptörlerine afinitesi yüksektir. Klinik araştırmalar şizofreninin pozitif, negatif ve afektif belirtilerine karşı etkili olduğunu göstermiştir. En sık rastlanan yan etkiler geçici somnolans, baş dönmesi, bulantı, dispepsi ve kabızlık olarak gözlenmiştir. Kilo, prolaktin düzeyi, kolinerjik sistem, kognitif işlevler ve ekstrapiramidal sistem üzerindeki yan etkileri düşük oranlarda rastlanmıştır.

Ziprasidone is a benzisothiazol piperazine derivative with a higher therapeutic efficacy and a favourable tolerability profile in the treatment of schizophrenia. Ziprasidone has a high 5-HT2 to D2 receptor binding ratio and also binds with high affinity to 5-HT1A receptors. Clinical trials indicate that ziprasidone is effective in treatment of the positive, negative and affective symptoms of schizophrenia. The most frequent side effects associated with ziprasidone are generally a transient somnolence, dizziness, nausea, dyspepsia, and constipation. Side effects of ziprasidone on the weight, prolactin level, cholinergic system, cognitive functions, and extrapyramidal system seem to bu minimal.
