Bin dokuz yüz ellili yıllarda kullanıma giren antipsikotiklerin tedavi edici etkilerinin yanında, ortaya yan etkileri de psikiyatride önemli bir yer tutar. Özellikle tardif (geç) distoni ve diskinezi hem hastayı hem de klinisyeni rahatsız eden bir problemdir. Bu yan etkiler hastanın tedavisini ve sosyal hayatını olumsuz yönde etkiler. Yeni kullanıma giren atipik antipsikotiklerde bu tür yan etkiler az görülse de risk hala vardır. Geç distoni ve diskinezi etyolojisinin belirsiz oluşu, bu duruma karşı alınacak önlemleri ve tedavi yaklaşımlarını zorlaştırmaktadır. Bazal ganglionlardaki reseptör düzeyindeki bozukluklar üzerinde en çok durulan teoridir. Bu yazıda geç distoni ve diskinezi tedavi yaklaşımları ile birlikte gözden geçirilmiştir.(

Antipsychotic drugs, which have been used in psychiatry since 1950's, do not only have therapeutic effects, but, they also, have some adverse effects. Particularly tardive dystonia and dyskinesia are one of the serious problems that can disturb clinicians who give these treatments to patients. The adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs may cause discontinuation of therapy and may have negative effects on the social life of the patients. Atypical antipsychotics, which are being used presently, have less risk in terms of tardive syndrome. However there is still a probability of late adverse effects. Although receptor abnormalities in basal ganglia are the favoured theory on the explanation of the tardive syndromes, the unclear etiology is one of the main problems of the treatment.
