Epidemiyolojik çalışmalarla saptanan şizofrenideki cinsiyet farklılığı bulgusu kadınlarda başlangıç yaşının geç olması ve hastalığın seyrinin tahminen daha iyi olmasından dolayı dişi cinsiyet hormonlarının koruyucu etkisiyle açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Biz de menstruel siklus boyunca kadın şizofren hastalardaki östradiol düzeyi ile klinik psikopatoloji arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırdık. 17 ? 42 yaş arasında düzenli menstruel siklusleri olan DSM 'i V 'e göre şizofreni tanısı konulmuş olan 30 hasta çalışma kapsamına alındı. Hastalara mensturasyonun foliküler , midsiklus ve luteal fazlarında östradiol ölçümüne paralel olarak 18 maddelik BPRS ile SAPS ve SANS değerlendirme ölçekleri uygulandı. Menstruel siklus boyunca östradiol düzeyindeki azalma ile klinik psikopatoloji arasında negatif bir ilişki gözlenmiştir.

As we know from the epidemiological studies that, there is a sex differentiation in schizophrenia. The onset of schizophrenia is later and the clinical course is better in women. Those findings have been tried to be explain by the protective effects of female sex hormones. We examined the association between clinical psychopathology and estradiol levels through the menstrual cyclus in schizophrenic women. Thirty female patients who met the DSM ? IV criteria for schizophrenia, ages between 17 ? 42 , with regular menstrual cyclus were included in the study. Estradiol levels were measured during the follicular, midcyclus and lutheal phases. BPRS, SAPS and SANS scores were measured in the same time. There was a negative correlation between the estradiol levels and clinical psychopathology through the menstrual cyclus.
