Psikiyatrinin temel amacının insanın "ruhsal acılarını" sağaltma olduğu düşünüldüğünde, tanımlayıcı psikiyatride duygu belirtileri diğer belirtilerden birisi olarak ele alınırken, biyolojik psikiyatri açısından ise, beyin araştırmalarında duyguların nörobiyolojisini anlamaya yönelik çalışmalar daha sonraya bırakılan konulardan birisi olmuştur. Bu durumun en olası nedeni, duygusal yaşantıların son derece öznel nitelikte olması ve ölçülmesi konusundaki güçlüklerdir. Bununla birlikte beyin görüntüleme tekniklerindeki ilerleme ve özellikle 20. yy'ın ikinci yarısında duyguların limbik sistemle ilgili olduğunun gösterilmesi bu konudaki çalışmaların da yavaş yavaş artmasına neden olmuştur. When the main purpose of psychiatry is thought to be to cure "psychological pain" of patients, the descriptive psychiatry evaluates the emotional symptoms as one of the others symptoms only, while in terms of biological psychiatry it has been one of the later issues to study the neurobiology of emotions in brain research. Emotional experiences are highly subjective and difficult to measure. These subjects could be most probable causes of this situation. However, progress in brain imaging techniques and with the demonstration of the emotions are related to the limbic system in the second half of the twentieth century, have led to a gradual increase in the researches. On the other hand, many theories in psychiatry and psychology define and categorize emotions from their point of view in terms of both their definition and etiology. In this article, the feelings of guilty, shame and regret will be discussed with biopsychosocial aspects.
