Kesitsel olarak kıskançlık, bilişsel değerlendirmeleri, duygusal tepkileri ve davranışsal dışavurumları içermektedir. Rekabet kıskançlıktaki anahtar ögedir ve rekabetin gerçekte olup olmaması ise daha az önemlidir. İlişkilerin sonlanmasına yol açabilecek denli güçlü etkiler yaratan kıskançlık, sanattan bilime uzanan geniş bir yelpazede yer bulmaktadır.

Jealousy is defined as a negative emotional response which stem from the perception of threat to loss of a valuable relationship due to a real or imagery opponent. With a cross sectional view, jealousy includes cognitive evalutions, emotional responses and behaviaoural expressions. Competition is the key element in the jealousy and it is less important whether competition is real or not.
