Kaygı, bir uyaranla ilişkili ya da ilişkili olmaksızın korku ve endişe ile belirli olan, nörokimyasal, nöroendokrin, davranışsal yanıtları tetikleyen emosyondur. Evrimsel açıdan kaygının makul ve yararlı etkileri vardır. Kaygı yanıtları hızlandırır, stresli durumlarla başa çıkılabilmesini sağlar ve sonlanır. Ancak bu emosyonel tepkiler, kalıcı ve yoğun olduğunda, nötral uyarana uzamış ya da yetersiz yanıtlar varsa hatta stresör olmadan ortaya çıkarsa patolojik kaygı belirleyicisi olabilir. Endişe ise, sonucu belli olmayan ancak olumsuz sonuçlanacağına inanılan gelecek olaylar hakkında duyulan kaygıya eşlik eden bilişsel bir etkinliktir. Endişe algılanan bir problemle baş edilebilmesi için motivasyon sağlar. Endişe ile bir sorunun çözülmesine odaklanılmadıysa veyauygun bir çözüme ulaşılamazsa yapıcı olmayan bir süreç olarak kabul edilebilir. Anxiety is an emotion that triggers neurochemical, neuroendocrine and behavioral responses manifesting with fear and worry with or without relation to a stimulus. From an evolutionary perspective, anxiety has reasonable and beneficial effects. Anxiety accelerates responses, makes it possible to cope with stressful situations and then ends. however, when these emotional reactions are permanent and intensive, they may be indicative of pathological anxiety if there is prolonged or insufficient response to neutral stimuli and even if they manifest without a stressor. Worry, on the other hand, is a cognitive activity accompanying the anxiety felt about future events which one believes will have a negative outcome despite the outcome being uncertain. Worry provides motivation for coping with a perceived problem. In the event one does not focus on solving a problem or an appropriate solution cannot be reached with worry, the process is thus considered to be nonconstructive. In this article, literature on anxiety and worry from various disciplines is reviewed.
