Klinisyenlerin ve araştırmacıların çoğu etiyoloji, tanı, tedavi, gidiş ve sonlanış bağlamında bu hastalığın heterojen gruplardan oluştuğunu kabul ederler. Bu makelenin amacı, tarihsel gelişim içerisinde şizofreni kavramını, heterojenitesini ve heterojeniteyi azaltmaya yönelik çalışmaları gözden geçirmektedir

Schizophrenia is probably the most devastating illness that psychiatrists treat. Most clinicians and investigators agree that it is a heterogeneous group of disorders in terms of etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. The purpose of this article is to review historical development of the concept of schizophrenia, its heterogenity and studies concerning the attempts to reduce this heterogenity.
