İki ayrı sendrom olan Rett sendromu ve mental retardasyonlu otizm, erken evrelerinde otizme ait ortak belirtiler gösterirler. Rett sendromunun gidişinde otizm bazen daha az göze çarpıcı olur ve bu, Rett sendromunu mental retardasyonlu otizmden ayırır. Bu olgu sunumunda otistik belirtilerle bize gönderilen 9 yaşındaki Rett sendromlu bir kız çocuğunun belirtileri otistik mental retardasyonlu hastalarınkiyle karşılaştırıldı. Rett sendromu ile mental retardasyonlu otizm arasında ayırıcı tanı yapmada davranışsal belirtilerin önemli olduğu sonucuna varıldı.

The Rett syndrome and autism with mental retardation share the common symptoms of autism, especially in early stages of the disorders. In the course of the Rett syndrome autism sometimes becomes less prominent and autistic behavior has a special quality differentiating the syndrome from autism with mental retardation. This case report presents a 9- [year]-old girl with Rett syndrome who was referred to us for autistic symptoms. The symptoms were compared to that of patients with autistic mental retardation. It is concluded that behavioral symptoms are significant in making differential diagnosis between the Rett syndrome and autism with mental retardation.
