Cinsel işlev bozukluklarının tedavisine yönelik geleneksel yaklaşımlarla, modern seks terapileri arasındaki köprünün temelleri 1970 yılında Masters ve Johnson ile atılmıştır. Masters ve Johnson’un seks terapileriyle aldıkları çarpıcı sonuçlar, bu alana farklı disiplinlerden büyük bir ilginin yönelmesine neden olmuştur. Alana yönelik bu ani ilgi ve popülarite bir yandan modern seks terapilerinin bugünkü konumuna gelişine zemin hazırlarken, bir yandan da bazı sorunları beraberinde getirmiştir. Zamanla Masters ve Johnson’un seks terapileri çeşitli yönlerden eleştirilmiş ve orijinal tedavi programlarında önemli değişiklikler yapılarak bugün kabul gören ve uygulanan biçimini almıştır. Günümüzde seks terapileri amprik bulgulara dayandırılarak daha gerçekçi bir zemine oturtulmuştur. Bununla birlikte seks terapileriyle ilgili gelişmeler henüz tamamlanmamışdır ve ele alınması gereken pek çok önemli sorun halen çözüm beklemektedir.

The important development which represented a bridge between traditional approaches and modern sex therapy for the treatment of sexual dysfunctions was established by Masters and Johnson in 1970. The remarkable results obtained by their teratment programme attracted enormous enthusiasm from different disciplines into the field of sex therapy. Although this interest has facilitated the developments in the field and led progress to modern sex therapy, it has also brought some problems. Since then, Masters and Johnson’s work has been subject to criticism and many important modifications have been made in their original treatment programme. Today a more realistic attitude prevails and limits and limitations of sex therapy are now more firmly based on empirical findings. The developments in the field of sex therapy, however, are not yet completed and there still remains a considerable amount of questions to be answered.
