İlk bakışta şizofrenide serotoninin önemi ile ilişkili veriler tutarsız ve çelişkili görünmektedir. Serotonerjik agonist ve antagonistlerin şizofrenik belirtileri iyileştirdiği bildirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada tedaviye dirençli kronik şizofreni tanısı alan hastaların nöroleptik tedavisine seçici bir serotonin geri alım engelleyicisi olan fluoksetin eklenmiştir. 8 hastada kontrolsuz olarak yapılan bu çalışmanın amacı fluoksetinin klinik etkinliğini araştırmaktır. Altıncı haftanın sonunda tüm hastaların psikiyatrik belirtileri, negatif ve pozitif belirtileri belirgin bir azalma göstermiştir. Hastalar global olarak da düzelme göstermiştir.

At first glance, data on serotonin in schizophrenia seen to be inconsistent, even contradictory. Both serotonergic agonists and antagonists have been reported to improve schizophrenic patients. In this trial we added fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake blocker, to the neuroleptic treatment of treatment resistant schizophrenic patients. The aim of this uncontrolled study in 8 chronic schizophrenic patients was to determine the clinical effect of fluoxetine. At the end of six weeks psychiatric symptom scores, negative and positive symptom scores of patients decreased significantly. All patients improved on global assessment scale scores.
